This image depicts the battle of Lexington and Concord in 1775. Although this battle occurred because the British were searching for American weapons to destroy, the colonists fought for a much more meaningful reason. The main reason the colonists took up arms to fight the British was their desire to live free in their own land. As one of the militiamen who fought that day stated, "We always had been free, and we meant to be free always, those redcoats didn't mean to we should." As he reflects upon his reason for fighting, it is evident that he and other colonists sought to be free in their own land. Where their children and their children's children will one day be able to live freely anywhere in their own land.

This image depicts the Boston Massacre which took place on March 5, 1770. After the French and Indian war, the British found themselves tremendously in debt and sought to tax the colonies by passing several acts such as the Townshend Act, the Quartering Act, and the Stamp Act. However the Colonists were deeply upset at the these acts and rebelled against the soldiers who were stationed in Boston under the Quartering Act. This resulted in the Boston Massacre which left eleven citizens dead or wounded. The colonists were enraged and rebellious towards the recent laws passed by the British parliament but they were successfully able to use the Boston Massacre as propaganda to further their rebellion against the British.

This image depicts the Boston Tea Party. On December 16, 1773, a group of colonists known as the Sons of Liberty dressed up as Indians and boarded British ships and dumped the tea into the Boston harbor. The Boston Tea Party was mainly caused by the colonists being upset with the Tea Tax passed by the British Parliament. Although the Tea Tax wasn't particularly bothersome to the colonists as they could cheaply purchase tea that was smuggled into the colonies, their rebellion was more based on the principle that the British had no right to tax them hence the saying "no taxation without representation". Many colonists believed that the Sons of Liberty were justified in their actions, however there was a group of colonists who believed the Sons of Liberty were not justified in their actions as they believed the destruction of private property would lead to anarchy.

This image depicts the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The importance of the signing of the Declaration of Independence was that the colonists were finally claiming to be an independent nation. The belief of the colonists was that they were justified in separating themselves from Britain due to the recent acts unjustifiably passed by King George III. The feeling of increased national identity was high among the colonists after the signing of the Declaration of Independence because the colonists were no longer loyal English subjects but were rebels who mutually defied Britain and sought to be a free and independent nation.
